Original Abstract

Solids are characterized by static and dynamic properties, which differ substantially from each other. A static state is characterized by the elastic modulus, E, which is, by definition, equal to the ratio of the normal stress, , to the elongation, . Systems in a dynamic state (such as vibrating systems) are characterized by an elastic modulus which is a complex quantity from the mathematical point of view. Let one end of a rectangular cross-section rod made of the material under investigation be clamped in a stand and excited by means of a harmonic signal to reach mechanical resonance. In this way, transversal oscillations of the rod arise. Supposing the oscillation damping to be low, the rod eigenfrequncies fn can be considered equal to the resonance ones. The resonance frequencies, f1, f2, f3, f4, can be measured by means of a general-purpose counter. Given the resonance frequencies, the elastic moduli can be calculated.
