Original Abstract

The present study concerns a detailed discussion of the nonlinear aerodynamic force model and the associated time domain analysis framework proposed by the authors for predicting the aeroelastic response of bridges under wind action. Significant developments in bridge aeroelastic analysis have been made utilizing realistic aerodynamic force modeling for bridges with bluff sections under wind action. With these developments as a background, this paper highlights state-of-the-art developments in the aeroelastic analysis and identifies new frontiers in aerodynamic tailoring of lightweight bridges. Challenges in the numerical aeroelastic analysis are pointed out that include consideration of nonlinearities in both structural dynamics and aerodynamics. All these analysis are numerically demonstrated on foot bridge deck using CFD system with FSI capabilities.
