Original Abstract

The proportion of concretes containing chemical additives and admixtures is growing steadily. The additive and admixture application aims at improving the properties of both fresh and matured concrete (for example, workability, durability, strength, etc.). The additives and admixtures have an effect on the cement hydration progress, too, influencing the hydration process kinetics. This is why it is beneficial to know their impact on the hydration kinetics so as to influence the concrete mix behaviour to the desired effect, e.g., using an appropriate plasticizer showing a retarding action as a side effect. The application of appropriate additives and admixtures is of particular importance when concreting large objects and/or concreting under elevated or lowered temperatures.
