Original Abstract

This paper describes a theoretical analysis of the behaviour of a crack growing in one elastic material M1 and penetrating through the interface into the second material M2. Conditions are formulated for the stability of a crack terminating at the interface of the two materials M1 and M2. The goal of the paper is to answer the question whether a crack with its tip at the interface penetrates through the interface into the second material or stays arrested at the interface and how the corresponding critical stress, ócrit , depends on the elastic mismatch of both materials. The problem is studied under the assumptions of linear-elastic fracture mechanics and the interface is of a welded type.
