Original Abstract

In the paper, the availability of free space optics (FSO) systems in dependence on weather conditions and on link parameters such as transmitted optical power, beam divergence, link path distance or receiver sensitivity is discussed. A number of phenomena in the atmosphere such as scattering, absorption and turbulence can affect beam attenuation, but in the case of wavelengths typical for FSO systems operation only turbulence and scattering are appropriate to be taken into consideration. Attenuation due to scattering can be expressed as a function of the link distance, wavelength and meteorological visibility. The atmospheric attenuation and consequently FSO availability were calculated by using actual visibility data collected at several airports in Europe.

Keywords

link availability, atmospheric attenuation, meteorological visibility, scattering.
