Original Abstract
Lignite is for a long time known almost solely as a fuel. Its fuel quality is not high but still acceptable. Anyway, lignite - as well as other fossil material - burning is really wastage of valuable raw material. Specific chemical composition of lignite, its texture, surface activity give to the lignite special properties which could be effectively used in various non-fuel technologies. In this contribution we report on part of our ongoing research aimed at application of the South Moravian lignite in soil protection and cultivation. The research is based on proved lignite sorption properties and high contents of humic substances. Comparison of soil and lignite affinity for selected heavy metals, lignite sorption properties to inorganic and organic species, effect of lignite on plant growth and heavy metal uptake by plants and characteristics of soil and lignite humic acids are presented. Results show that lignite in its natural state can serve as a soil conditioner, soil remediation agent, and plant growth support. It can be used not only in food-producing agriculture but also and perhaps preferably in re-cultivation and soil-restoring technologies, tree planting, forestry etc. Although the acting power of untreated lignite may not be as high as that of some activated or synthetic materials, it may be advantageous because of its low price and natural origin.
