Original Abstract

Segmentation of retinal layers from optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is useful to diagnose the progress of retinal diseases. OCT images are degraded by speckle noise and they must be smoothed before segmentation, e. g. by diffusion. This paper deals with the region-based level set method for segmentation of retinal layers. It can find them automatically by iterative process of numerical solution of partial differential equation. This method is very good for segmentation of noised images and it finds contour in discontinuity of layer boundary too. This is one of more advantages of segmentation by active contour, but this method is very dependent on settings of partial differential equation parameters, such as time step, etc. Incorrect values may cause unstable process.
