Original Abstract
Most of engineers working in the field of dams and levees are confronted with problems of internal erosion. Due to the variability of geological structure of the sub-base and spatial variability of soil properties, the internal erosion assessment is subject to uncertainties. The experimental study was carried out with sandy soil which frequently occurs at the subbase of flood levees in Czech Quaternary floodplains. To demonstrate the uncertainties in sand properties and critical gradients, two sets of 39 samples were tested in vertical columns. Some partial results of running extensive experimental research are presented in the paper and compared with results of previous research of various authors.
