Original Abstract
Synthetic polymers are widely used due to their excellent properties which can be "tailored" with respect to their planned use. The total amount of synthetic polymers produced and used all over the world is constantly increasing. At the end of their life cycle great part of the polymer containing products is disposed on the waste dumps, where they remain usually for quite a long time, because they are commonly resistant against the natural decomposition processes. Therefore, polymers with increased biodegradability are proposed and synthesized. Due to large mass flow in this field it would be very useful to evaluate the possible environmental effects of these polymers. The main aim of our study was the identification of degradation products of synthetic polymers of polyurethane type, modified by several additives improving their biodegradability under environmental (real as well as accelerated) conditions.
