Original Abstract
The statistical length scale, i.e. the spatial measure of variability of material parameters can act as a localization limiter of the failure precess in quasi-brittle materials. This fact has been utilized in the formulation of an adaptive strategy governed by the correct reflection of stress redistribution in the damage zone occuring during the failure process. The usual damage/plasticity framework is used to formulate the extension of the standard time-integration algorithm. The refinement/coarsening strategy is controlled by the relative distance to the failure threshold at each material point. This variable controls both the time- and space- resolution of the discretization. In particular, the formulation renders general criteria for controling the time-step and spatialy defined refinement/coarsening control function (RCCF). The constructed RCCF reflects the variability of arbitrary material paarameters affecting both stiffness and strength. The pilot formulation and verification of the framework has been presented recently using one-dimensional example with simple hardening plasticity material \cite{VorChuJer:06}. Here, we extend the concept to strain-softening failure and demonstrate the procedure on two-dimensional examples (tensile test and 3-point-bending test) with different scales of spatial variability. The efficiency shall be compared with the overkill discretization of the problem. The presented adaptive extension serves as a basis for efficient Monte-Carlo simulations of non-linear problems with quasi-brittle material behavior allowing us to study the role of the statistical and deterministic length scales in the simulation of the localized failure.
