Original Abstract

Information about the effect of surface roughness and topography on lubrication film thickness and pressure is of increasing interest in studies of behavior machine elements operated under mixed lubrication conditions. This paper focuses on the effects of roughness features on lubrication film thickness within mixed lubricated contact. Optical test rig is used to study the lubricant film behavior between the flat surface of a chromium coated glass disc and a steel ball. Interferograms are collected with a reflected light microscope and recorded with a high-resolution or high speed digital camera. Obtained results confirmed the key effect of micro-features depth on film thickness behaviour under rolling/sliding conditions and benefits of three dimensional surface topography evaluation for lubrication capabilities considerations in mixed lubrication regime.
