Original Abstract

The procedure for the environmental risk assessment of a substance consists of comparing the concentration in the environmental compartments (predicted environmental concentration PEC) with the concentration below which unacceptable effects on organisms will most likely not occur (predicted no effect concentration PNEC). This comparison should be done for all stages of their life cycle from production to disposal or recovery and for each environmental compartment pottentialy exposed. The risk characterisation is carried out by comparing the PEC with the PNEC. This is done separately for each of the protection goals (for example aquatic ecosystem).
