Original Abstract
This article deals with the numerical simulation of air flow in a realistic model of the human upper airways and a comparison of calculated velocity profiles with experimental results. The realistic model of the upper respiratory tract used for the comparison includes the larynx, trachea and bronchial tree to the fourth generation of branching. The numerical simulation employs URANS approach for cyclic flow regime which represents inspiration and expiration of air by sinusoidal function for the air flow rate of 15 l/min. The experimental measurement is performed using Phase-Doppler Particle Anemometry (P/DPA) on the same geometry as the simulation. The velocity data are compared at several points in the trachea, and in the first and second generation of the bronchial tree. Specific air flow characteristics are documented and discussed based on results of the numerical simulation of the velocity field.
