Original Abstract
Latent heat storage is attracting a lot of attention in many energy storage applications. Advances in chemical engineering and material science have enabled development of new phase change materials (PCMs) with the possibility to tailor their properties for a specific use. The main advantage of the PCMs in the area of thermal storage is their high thermal storage capacity in a narrow temperature interval. This advantage can be utilized in cool thermal storage in building structures. A set of experiments has been performed with the aim to investigate the performance of PCM-based cool thermal storage in building structures. The experiments carried out in an environmental chamber confirmed better performance of latent heat cool thermal storage in comparison with cool thermal storage based on sensible heat. The results of full scale experiments in test rooms indicate that the cool thermal storage in building structures has a potential to reduce the peak cooling loads, especially in the climatic regions with predominantly sensible cooling loads.
