Original Abstract
The paper is aimed at the fuzzy analysis of the load carrying capacity of concrete-encased steel columns. Fuzzification of the strength characteristics of concrete for which incomplete information obtained from a small number of samples was performed. Incomplete information on input variables influences the reliability of results of statistical analysis of ultimate limit state. Sufficient experimentally obtained information on the material characteristics of steel were available and were taken into consideration as singletons. The fuzzy analysis was performed using the general extension principle. Obtained output is the fuzzy number of the load carrying capacity, which quantifies the uncertainty due to vague knowledge of the strength characteristics of concrete. Possibilities and differences of the fuzzy analysis are listed, and comparison with the stochastic solution is also performed. The general significance of experimental research as a tool for the procurement of statistical data on material characteristics, which are frequently the most important input of mathematical models is discussed.
