Original Abstract

Conventional confocal microscopes form the confocal image using various types of scanning systems. Besides other consequences of this fact, their maximum achievable imaging speed is limited. We report on the holographic confocal microscope which is based on a broad-spource image-plane holographic method adapted for a real-time reflected-light microscopy of the specimen surface regions. It is verified both theoretically and experimentally that the main imaging parameters of the microscope are comparable with those of a conventional confocal microscope. The only exception is the imaging speed which is not limited by any part of the optical system and thus can be much higher.
