Original Abstract

By a controlled electric drive we mean an electric machine- electric power converter system. In the case of and automobile starter designed for frequent repeated starting, a brushless, machine is necessary to achieve sufficient reliability. Such an electric machine must basically be an alternating current one, that is an induction or synchronous motor. A brushless machine-converter system is referred to as a brushless drive. Every such drive can, in principle, quite naturally work both in a motor and a generator mode. If a machine fulfils the coupled function of a starter and an alternator, then it has to conform to unusually strict requirements as to the control range: a huge starting torque in the starter mode, a wide speed range in the motor mode. Moreover, a high efficiency is required in the generator mode.
