Original Abstract
The paper describes the measuring and evaluating of torque and cutting force components (in axial and tangential directions) with four components piezoelectric dynamometer KISTLER 9272, when drilling a glass fibre reinforced plastic and carbon prepreg. A special PC-software and statistical assessment are used for evaluation of torque and forces with respect to an influence of machined material, orientation of the reinforcing fibres, cutting conditions and drill material, geometry and wear. Morphology of machined surfaces is observed and the cutting process is evaluated with a scanning electron microscope. Multiple regression analysis is used to determine the complex relationships between cutting torque and forces versus the machined material, drill diameter and feed per revolution. The wear intensity of high speed steel drills is very high when drilling of reinforced plastics in comparison with the wear of sintered carbide drill. The values of torque/axial cutting force have increased approximately 2.5/7 times respectively, due to the high speed steel drill wear. The changes of the cutting force and torque values are cyclic in the frame of every revolution of a drill, according to the orientation of reinforcing fibres (these values are lower perpendicularly to fibres axes and higher along to fibres axes).
