Original Abstract
The initiation of this article was motivated by the fact that the definition of the concept limit state is not at present unified; however it is the unification of the concept that is desirable for all of the areas of application, and - in particular - for the area of technical objects design, engineering analyses, materials engineering, technical expertise, etc. In the introduction, the article refers to comparative analyses of the concept limit state as indicated in various literature sources with the aim to define and unify the concept in terms of conventions. The concepts such as state of the object, transient and limit state of the object are discussed and consequently defined. An attention is also paid to a commonly used concept of limit state of material. In the section devoted to philosophy of approach to it states, the concept of set of possible limit states is discussed. An essential part of the article is devoted to classification of limit states based on their physical and technical substance. Limit states for technical objects are divided into two basic groups – technical limit states and environmental limit states. Both of these groups are then logically subdivided into further subgroups with the aim to form a complex structure of limit states.
