Original Abstract
The contribution considers the effects of adding reinforcement to existing masonry structures using stainless steel non-prestressed reinforcement. The mechanisms of failure (and the way of achieving the load bearing capacity) in masonry structures with additional reinforcement are described when the structure is loaded with an eccentric force or with a bending moment. The results of the experiments carried out on two groups of beams subject to bending loads are presented. Based upon the experiments, a theoretical model for describing the behaviour of reinforced masonry beams has been developed taking into account the build up of flexural stress to the point of failure. After appropriate testing has been completed the coefficient of reliability can be determined for an analysis using ultimate state principles and, after further practical verification, theory can be applied to the design of additional reinforcement to existing masonry structures.
