Original Abstract
In her paper, the authors analyzes a relation of sustainability and competitiveness as complex and unique. There is no chance to use traditional formal tools as e.g. statistics. There are many reasons for that e.g. shortage of data, interdisciplinary nature. Modeling and optimization of vaguely described and prohibitively complex systems in a realistic environment must necessarily be based on vague and sparse knowledge. The analysis of scientific literature and the investigation fulfilled. A theory of qualitative modeling offers a flexible tool capable of dealing with very vague knowledge items. The goal is to introduce some methods of artificial intelligence into the decision making, which covers interdisciplinary tasks where integration of such sub tasks as solutions of ecological problems versus competitiveness. The key formal tool will be common sense reasoning, specifically qualitative models.Qualitative models are based on three values only, namely increasing, constant and decreasing. It means that just trends are considered and no quantities e.g. numbers. Qualitative models are used to generate all possible scenarios taking into consideration multi-criteria nature of a problem under study. The complete list of scenarios guarantees that any (multi-criteria) search based on it is complete as well. The scenarios can be screened against the prescribed trends (e.g. maximization or minimization of different objective functions). A semi realistic case study (environmental aspects of ecology) is presented.
