Original Abstract
The commonly used integral models of MRI signal are based on volume distribution of the static proton density as the signal source, sometimes modified by a multiplicative relaxation factor. By replacing this source function by the time-variable transversal magnetisation, a generalisation is obtained that enables to describe the MRI principles, different imaging techniques and image reconstruction methods in a transparent and consistent way. The generalisation enables to include all the relaxation phenomena and differently weighted imaging into consideration. Also, the artefacts related to time-variance of the magnetisation distribution due to any other origin (e.g. flow and diffusion) can be included in the model as well. This way, even relatively complex phenomena like the time-variance of the magnetisation during data acquisition in fast MRI under complicated circumstances may in principle be included with a potential for deeper (perhaps numerical) analysis. Several examples of using the model to explain consistently the common MRI techniques are appended.
