Original Abstract
The key parameters of the fiber splices for special applications are the tensile strength and the attenuation. The influence of the cleaving angle of the single-mode optical fiberto these properties of fiber splice is presented in this paper. The standard communication single-mode fiber with diameter of core and cladding 8.5/125 microns have been used for angled splicing. The spliced fibers have been cleaved with the angles 2.7, 5.7, 9.4, 10.7 and 14.6. Fujikura CT-100 was used to cleaving fibers with specified angles. The cleaving angle was set-up by applying the torsion force to the cleaved fiber during scratching. Splicing have been done by fusion splicing automat Fujikura FSM 100P, which has rotational fiber holders for polarization fibers splicing and angled splicing. All parameters of splicing process set-up and final appearance of every evaluated splice has been recorded. The splice attenuation values have been acquired from splicer test and evaluation process. All fiber splices have been tested for tensile strength. Standard fiber without splice has tensile strength about 10N. This strength drops down by one decade in standard splicewith perpendicular cleaved fibers. The tensile strength is increasing when spliced fibers have been cleaved with defined angle. The disadvantage of angled splicing is the expected higher insertion loss. On the other side the advantage is lower back reflection. The knowledge of splice tensile strength and the optical properties of the spliced fibers for cleaved fibers with various angles allow to specify the acceptable compromise between increase of tensile strength of splice and increase of insertion loss. Then, it is possible to choose the right angle of cleave for each application.
