Original Abstract

South Moravian lignite was oxidized by hydrogen peroxide (3 wt.%) at 50 C for 16 h under atmospheric pressure. Oxidation digests were separated into lipophilic and hydrophilic fractions, which were detected with GC and GC-MS. The lipophilic components of the lignite comprised fatty acids, alkanols and two lignin subunits. The hydrophilic fractions predominantly comprised aliphatic carboxylic acids such as succinic acids, malonic acids, malic acids or pimelic acids. This technique of oxidation degradation is a suitable method of elucidating the structure of coal. It is particularly applicable to the aliphatic components of coal structure. Considering that the coals consist of small aromatic ring structures with many functional groups, it may be examinate as a new method to produce chemicals from lignite under mild conditions.
