Original Abstract

Historie vzniku a osudy Eupalinova tunelu/štoly byly v odborné literatuře již vícekrát popsány (např. [2, 3, 4, 5], v ČR [6]). Pro zásobování tehdejšího hlavního města ostrova vodou byla stavba realizována Eupalinem z Megary v polovině 6. stol. př. Kr. Tento způsob dodávky vody do opevněného města měl nepochybně více důvodů (strategický, hygienický i obecně občanský). Zcela funkční tunel/štolu uvádí právě Hérodotos, který navštívil ostrov okolo r. 460 př. Kr. Dnes je pokládáno za hlavní projev Eupalinova inženýrského mistrovství právě směrové a výškové vedení stavby. Jeho projekt je patrně (např. podle [3]) teprve druhou dlouhou liniovou podzemní stavbou prokazatelně raženou současně ze dvou protějších portálů.

English abstract

The history of the origination and the life story of the Tunnel of Eupalinos have been described in technical literature several times (e.g. [2, 3, 4, 5]; in the Czech Republic [6]). The structure was carried out by Eupalinos of Megara in the middle of the 6th century BC for the purpose of supplying water to island capital of that time. There were undoubtedly more reasons for developing this system of supplying water to the fortified city (strategic, sanitary and generally civic ones). The fully functional tunnel is mentioned by Herodotos himself, who visited the island around 460 BC.The horizontal and vertical alignment design is today considered to be the main demonstration of Eupalinos engineering mastery. His design is probably (e.g. according to [3]) only the second long underground linear construction where it was clearly established that it was driven concurrently from two opposite portals.
