Original Abstract

This study represents a multi-scale approach to strength of cement paste, which is the binder for all cementitious materials, including mortar, concrete, high-performance concrete, sprayed concrete, jet grouted soil, etc. Nowadays, working groups both of engineering mechanics and of material science aim at developing scientific models that are capable to predict macroscopic material strength of cementitious materials from knowledge on their composition and on their degree of hydration. In this context, it appears to be promising to start with experimental characterization techniques at the finest possible scales (which are nowadays nanometer scales), and to progressively upscale (homogenize) strength via intermediate micro- and meso-scales up to the macroscopic material scale.

Keywords

Cement paste, calorimetry testing, ultrasonic testing, uniaxial compression testing, nanoindentation testing.
