Original Abstract
Quantum dots, tiny light-emitting nanocrystals, have emerged as a new promising class of fluorescent probes for biomolecular and cellular imaging. In comparison with organic dyes and fluorescent proteins, QDs have unique optical and electronic properties such as size-tunable light emission, improved signal brightness, resistance against photobleaching, and simultaneous excitation of multiple fluorescence colors. The biomedical applications of nanoparticles are rooted in the advanced functional design, and have been realized in preclinical experimental diagnosis. In the end, they will contribute to personalized clinical treatment based on molecular profiles of each individual patient. The development is rapid and multidirectional, but at present is still in its early stages. The main applications of nanoparticles can be divided into several major directions: diagnostic molecular imaging, delivery of drug and gene, and targeted therapy.
