Original Abstract
Protective coatings on blades serve as physical barriers between the underlying substrate and the outer environment. This article presents an overview of damage mechanisms leading to failure of all basic types of coatings (diffusion, overlay and thermal barrier) on turbine blades of aircraft engines during service. Although a special emphasize is devoted to destructive effects of thermo-mechanical fatigue and overheating, the severe effects of hot corrosion, oxidation and erosion effects are also described. Most important material and design parameters of coatings are highlighted with respect to an optimum protection from damage caused by aggressive environment and thermo-mechanical loading. For this purpose, many recent results of advanced numerical models based on fracture mechanics are taken into account.
