Original Abstract
Proposed paper deals with the distance estimation issue in small size indoor, respectively outdoor environments between two devices based on the IEEE 802.15.4a standard. This kind of localization can be used in various applications intended for asset tracking. On a basis of time of arrival of received data signal, the distance between the two nodes is estimated. Basic problem of this technique is precise timing and short signal propagation intervals at small distances. Also these devices are mainly targeted for low cost and low power consumption appliances, so they have to utilize cheap hardware, which has problems with precise measurements. Techniques based on the received signal strength for distance estimation in wireless networks were already introduced, but there is an effort for improvement in accuracy in distance estimation. Proposed work deals with an experimental validation of method based on time of arrival using the two way ranging approach. This method results in the significant improvement in distance estimation accuracy in comparison to the known method based on the signal strength. Main contribution of the article is real evaluation of two way ranging method.
