Original Abstract
The paper deals with the assessment of fracture toughness of selected alkali-activated aluminosilicate composite (AAAS) made of ceramic brick dust as a precursor, an alkaline activator with the silicate modulus of Ms = 1.0 and a quartz sand filler. The composite is characterized by a highly heterogeneous microstructure whose fracture behavior is of high interest since the material uses waste material and is used as an alternative to ordinary concretes. From three-point fracture bending tests on 40 × 40 × 160 mm specimens, effective fracture toughness and unstable fracture toughness values were determined using the Effective Crack Model and the Double-K Fracture Model. The microstructural phases of the specimens were tested for local fracture toughness via nano-scratch with spherical tip. Mutual comparisons for micro- and macroscopic toughness values were made. Local values were separated into several composite phases with the aid of scanning electron microscope imaging. The microscopic fracture toughness of the main reaction product correlates closly to values determined from macroscopic tests.
