Original Abstract

Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication becomes in these days one of the most discussed research topics. This technology enables in comparison with traditional Human-to-Human (H2H) sending the data between individual nodes or between nodes and central node (gateway) without human interaction. Everyone realizes the big potential (technical, financial) of this research area. M2M should be used e.g. in these fields: Smart metering, Intelligent transport systems or E-healthcare. For telecommunication operators and their cellular mobile networks, M2M communication represents a big challenge. In most cases the M2M data will be transmitted over LTE mobile network. LTE network is designed and optimized as IP based architecture. In comparison with broadband type of applications (H2H), the M2M traffic presents a real challenge. It is a consequence of small packet size of the M2M data which is transmitted as irregular bursts by a large number of end stations. In this paper we focus on two most important questions for telecommunication operators. The first question is what is the maximum number of end stations which will be served by the base station in the LTE network without overloading of this base station. The second question is dealing with the maximum amount of data transmitted across the LTE network without overloading the base station. On the base of the obtained results from simulation made in OPNET Modeler, we present some improvements and ecommendations to avoid or at least minimize overloading of the base station in LTE network.
