Celý proces produkce a distribuce všech státních mapových děl vydávaných v České republice podléhá určité legislativě, tedy i kartografické znaky jsou pro tato díla závazná. Stejné pravidlo platí nejen u nás v České republice, ale také v sousedních státech, tedy ve Spolkové republice Německo, Republice Rakousko, Polské republice i Slovenské republice. I přes neustálé snahy Evropské unie o sjednocování formátů geodetických dat, platí stále v každém státě odlišná legislativa a tedy i různé kartografické sady pro státní mapová díla. Porovnáním těchto znaků můžeme zjistit rozdílnost ve znázornění stejných objektů a jevů z reálného světa na mapě. Kromě toho lze také pozorovat rozdíly v důležitosti jednotlivých objektů a jevů pro dané státy, a to nejen podle zvolené velikosti znaků, ale především na základě toho, zda je objekt na mapě vůbec zobrazen. Vzhled jednotlivých kartografických znaků neovlivňuje pouze historický vývoj znakových sad pro státní mapová díla v jednotlivých státech, ale také vliv sousedních států vzhledem k jejich společné historii. V současné době jsou znaky ovlivňovány také rychlým vývojem digitálních technologií.

The same rule applies not only to us in the Czech Republic but also in neighboring countries, ie in the Federal Republic of Germany, the Republic of Austria, the Republic of Poland and Slovak Republic. By comparing these features we can find the same disparity in the representation of objects and phenomena of the real world on the map. In addition, one can also observe differences in the importance of individual objects and events for the States, not only by the size of the selected characters, but mainly on the basis of whether the object is displayed on the map at all. The appearance of each cartographic symbols not only affect the historical development of character sets for state map works in individual countries, but also affect neighboring countries due to their shared history. Currently, the characters are also affected by the rapid development of digital technology.
