Original Abstract
An analysis of the properties of discrete and digital systems can be performed in several ways. The basic description is via difference equations. There are two ways how to write difference equations making use of forward and backward differences. To solve a difference equation, either the theory of difference equations or the Z-transform can be used. Another representation of the properties is obtained with the aid of matrix equations and signal flow graphs. Of great advantage is also the application of methods of symbolic and semi-symbolic analysis. The paper gives a survey of individual methods of analysis, and their mutual connections are indicated. Only linear discrete systems with constant parameters, which in practice are the most frequently used systems, are taken into consideration. The analysis of digital systems is similar but, in addition, effects of quantization need to be taken into account.
