Original Abstract
The paper presents results of numerical and experimental determination of frequency dependence of electrical impedance of piezoelectric elements for use in acoustic emission sensors for nondestructive predictive diagnostics. The shape of the electrical impedance characteristic of the piezo element, especially position of electrical resonances, relates to the mechanical resonances of the sensor. Analyzed piezoelectric elements for sensors have been made from soft PZT ceramics with different shape of the elements and distribution of elec-trodes. Element shapes were thin discs, cylindrical and conical. Analysis has been firstly car-ried out numerically with finite element modeling and later on compared with experimental results obtained by measurement with precision impedance analyzer. The presented study analyzes the compliance between numerical simulations and practical measurements. With numerical simulations all applicable boundary conditions and material characteristics have been tested to successfully predict electrical impedance of real elements. Also influences of electrodes size and their placement related to the electrical impedance of the element have been investigated, especially influence of the size of the smaller electrode in off-axis non symmetrical elements (conical shape). Result of the comparison indicates the possibility to predict real electrical impedance of the sensor elements based on numerical simulations.
