Original Abstract

In the early nineties, two well-known physicists, Charles Bowman from Los Alamos and Carlo Rubbia, Nobel Prize winner and director of CERN, they proposed an another option – design of new hybrid systems, coupling together nuclear reactor, accelerator and heavy target, where spallation reactions generate huge number of fast neutrons. These systems might be able to transmute long lived spent fuel isotopes to short lived ones, generate energy and that’s why, they can be a sustainable answer to the nuclear energy question. But is it really so simple and straightforward? Is it technically feasible, economically competitive and public acceptable solution? Within the last twenty years, there were a significant number of projects dealing with accelerator driven system, either designed for spent fuel transmutation or just or a powerful sources of neutrons for science, technology and applications.
