Original Abstract
This paper describes efficiency enhancing of an internal-combustion engine by means of improvements in mechanical efficiency of its crank train. The keynote is the reduction of number of crankshaft main bearings to gain reduced crankshaft power losses. The progressive concept of an assembled crankshaft derives benefits from forging, sheet plate molding, and laser welding. For examination of not only power losses benefits, but also dynamic behaviour challenges, the state-of-the-art computational methods are used. The computational model, including modally reduced flexible bodies, is assembled as well as numerically solved in a Multi-Body System. An interaction between crankshaft and engine block and between crankshaft and connecting rods is simultaneously solved via hydrodynamic model of a journal bearing.
