Original Abstract

The present paper describes the stochastic approach to the reliability optimization of thin-walled steel columns. The shape of imperfections of a column is taken into consideration according to local and global buckling modes. The interaction between global and local buckling modes causes a collapse of thin-walled columns. The size of imperfections which influences the decrease of load carrying capacity is random. The load carrying capacity is an output random quantity. The design load carrying capacity evaluated by statistic analysis is compared with the design load carrying capacity according to design standards. The reliability of a carrying thin-walled column is assessed, and reasons of calibration of standard procedures aimed at obtaining the optimum design reliability and economy are discussed.
