Original Abstract
Pharmacokinetic modeling of glucose provides the means to quantify local metabolic rate in various tissues. The 2-deoxy-2-(18F)fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) radiopharmaceutical allows researchers to use and optimize numerical models for this purpose in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) clinical studies. This work provides an insight into how the models were created and historically updated. It describes some of the models in detail and mentions their drawbacks and subsequent solutions. The invasivity of the early metabolic rate estimation methods is mentioned and numerical and graphical solutions are presented.
