Original Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are bacterial polyesters that are considered biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives to petrochemical plastics. The most common polymer among polyhydroxyalkanoates is polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) which, although having material properties very close to polypropylene, lacks some qualities. Above all, it is very stiff and brittle. This problem is usually solved by the production of the copolymers, most often with 3-hydroxyvalerate units (3HV). The 3HV/3HB ratio significantly influences the different characteristics of the copolymer, such as impact strength, flexural modulus and melting temperature.
