Original Abstract
Superelastic nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti), or nitinol, alloys are becoming integral to the design of a variety of new medical products. We are investigating electrical properties of this unique alloy. Nonlinearity and noise measurements are used to obtain information on sample quality structure and their reliability. The nonlinearity measuring method is based on distortion of the first harmonic signal by dislocations cracks and other defects. Result is that in vicinity of the cracks the value of current is distorted and so we are expecting that third harmonic voltage can be used as quality and reliability indicator. In other words, the transmission is linear if an ac voltage is applied to a component and the current paths consist of perfect elements with increasing conductivity. The resulting current will then show a true picture of the applied signal. If the elements on the other hand are imperfect, the current will be distorted and generate a voltage inside the component that will produce a distorted signal.
