Original Abstract

Lead target and uranium blanket setup called 'Energy plus Transmutation' was irradiated by 1.6 GeV deuteron beam from the Nuclotron accelerator at the Laboratory of High Energies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna). Neutrons generated by spallation reactions of deuterons with lead target interact with subcritical uranium blanket. In the neutron field outside the blanket radioactive uranium and thorium samples were irradiated. Reaction rate of some residual nuclei determined using the method of gamma spectroscopy in the experiment is used to calculate the transmutation power of the setup. Experimental results are compared with the Monte Carlo calculation performed by the MCNPX 2.6C code and with some results of the TARC experiment.
