Chitosan is used in a wide range of industries - from agricultural and biotechnological to medical applications. In medicine, chitosan films are often used as wound covers, especially due to their low cost, ease of preparation, mechanical properties, high biocompatibility, easy application and strong adhesion of the film to the wound, while fully adapting to the shape and relief of the wound. Equally important is the film's ability to permeate water vapour and gases, while keeping the wound clean and remaining impermeable to bacteria and other microorganisms. Nevertheless, the possibility of incorporating drugs (e.g. anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics) is also important due to their subsequent gradual release into the wound area. The objective of the wound cover application is to accelerate the wound healing process thanks to the mechanical coverage of the wound, but also due to the effects of drugs on potential pathogens that could enter the wound. This project aimed to prepare different chitosan-based films (various molecular weights, degrees of deacetylation and concentrations of chitosan were used). Subsequently, the mechanical properties of these chitosan films were studied and the possibility of incorporating different medicines and the rate of release of these drugs from the chitosan film by diffusion was investigated. The prepared films were placed in physiological solution at a constant temperature of 37 °C and subsequently sampled at 6; 12; 24; 48 and 72 hours. The experiments were done in triplicate and collected samples were subsequently analyzed by LC-ESI-MS/MS.
