Original Abstract

Importance of lower limbs is often discussed in the area of road cycling, to the intend of pedalling effectiveness etc. To the contrary, importance of trunk activity and upper limb work are forgotten. However, these areas are later in cyclists projected in most common imbalances. Recent possibilities of rehabilitation in sport in combination with technically developed society enable tuning of the finest details of road bicycle sitting, together with compensatory exercises. All these may help sportsmen to extend their sport career and decrease the consequences of repetitive strain injury. Group and Methods: For this case report was intentionally chosen our proband R.B. (sex: Male, age: 22 years old, height 180 cm, weight 73 kg, dominant upper limb: Right). The study itself was performed from the beginning of February till half of April. Changes in the seat post adjustment on road bike were performed in the previous training period, i.e. at the beginning of February. At that time, the education about compensatory exercises took place. Individual one-hour sessions were performed from March twice a week, supplemented by everyday self-therapy. Results: In final examination, the state of soft tissues in the area of arm girdle was assessed. Release of fascia slide of individual fascias was observed. The proband was able to elevate the arm actively from starting 110° to 160° without thoracolumbar lordotization. Outer rotation in arms was symmetrical, joint play of hyoid bone was free in all directions, motion of the cervical spine to rotation and lateral flexion was approximately the same comparing to the entrance imbalances. Release of joint play was observed in articulacio sternoclavicularis. Deficit of contact distance with base in Thomayer test decreased from previous 10 cm to 5 cm. Internal rotation of left hip still persists. The abduction stereotype in hips still also points out the dominance of flexors and outer rotators of hips. Clear proof of the hypertonus of ischiocrural muscles and especially m. tensor fasciae latae is continuously limited joint play of caput fibulae bilaterally. Conclusions: Well sized bicycle helps to prevent unsuitable load of motion apparatus.. In best case, the cyclist should go through seat post adjustment and education about cyclist training compensation at new bike purchase. Securing the stability of cyclist's contact points with a bicycle offers the possibilities to improve riding technique, reaching better performance, but mainly decreasing inadequate overload of motion system.
