Original Abstract
Soil organic matter (SOM) is one of the crucial components of soil responsible for its fertility, water-holding capacity and the interactions with nutrients and pollutants. The main reactive part of SOM are humic substances (HS) – natural substances formed via the chemical and biological degradation of plants and animal residues. Due to the conventional agricultural practices (resulting in devastation of soil microbial life) and the increasing demands on the agronomical and agricultural production there are tendencies to improve soil properties. One of the possibilities are soil conditioners (biochar, lignite, etc.) based on organic biomass waste materials. Wise selection of appropriate soil conditioner can improve the soil properties through leaching of organic molecules and inorganic nutrients. Nutrient availability is crucial for crops, as they rely on these nutrients during their growth and development. One way is the use of conventional soil fertilizers based on biomass residues such as compost, animal manure and mulch. But recently, the attention of a research is focused also on the application of alternative waste materials such as lignite, biochar or a mixture of individual humic fractions. The main goal of these soil supportive substances (SSS) is not only to increase soil fertility, but also to improve soil physicochemical properties and the stability of SOM.
