Original Abstract
The fluid flow in pipe with low discharge and high swirl is convenient for formation of secondary flow structures. The onset of secondary vortex structures is driven by flow disturbances, i.e., pressure pulsations, local change of geometry, etc. Such situation might for example appears in the suction part of centrifugal pump operated at low discharge. Once these flow conditions appear in the suction of centrifugal pump, the flow is unstable and the pump performance is affected in terms of delivery head drop. The vortex structures forms flow blockage and since their spatial shape is not axi-symmetric there is also significant flow dynamics. This work presents the results of numerical calculation by means of CFD simulation of corresponding flow regime of centrifugal pump. The focus is on description of vortex structures dynamics which is important for further application of flow control devices to enhance pump operation.
