Original Abstract

One of the main causes of embankment dam failures is the destabilizing effect of seepage forces of the infiltrating water during floods. A mathematical model describing the process of non stationary free surface flow of water through the embankment dam and its foundation was proposed and verified by laboratory experiments. The existence of analogy between seepage and heat transfer and diffusion made it possible to analyze the hydraulic problem with ANSYS/THERMAL. The application of ANSY/THERMAL with some recommendations and the examples of numerical results are presented and described in detail.
