Original Abstract
Underground constructions such as tunnels and subways are becoming more significant nowadays. Therefore it is important to pay attention for their designing with respect to the serviceability and durability. One of important and still actual problems in underground constructions is fire protection. If fire occurs for example in road tunnel, the temperature rises immediately, mainly due to chimney effect, up to 1000 - 1200 C. Such high temperatures cause an undesirable fast degradation of concrete made from Portland cement, connected with compressive strength decrease, cracking and spalling. This paper deals with a possibility of subsidiary fire protection (for example with wall covering) using a material based on alkali-activated slag. This material is more resistant against high temperatures, especially against shock loading, than Portland cement concretes. In the experiments we examined and compared the behaviour and properties of concrete specimens made from Portland cement and alkali activated slag after shock treatment at the temperatures of 1000 and 1200 C. The influence of aggregates, comparing quartz sand and electrical porcelain, was also examined.
