Original Abstract

The channel loss compensation can be realized by a transmitter pre-emphasis or a receiver equalization. In the paper the application of a pulse-width modulated (PWM) pre-emphasis to the equalization of PCBs transmission lines with more complex transfer function is described. It provides an alternative to the finite impulse response (FIR) pre-emphasis with advantages in the light of modern CMOS where the maximum voltage swing is pushed below 1.0 V. The PWM pre-emphasis method does not change the pulse amplitude as for conventional FIR pre-emphasis, but instead exploits timing resolution. Our research is focused on optimatization of the standard PWM scheme for adaptive PWM pre-emphasis method. Finally, data-dependent adaptive PWM pre-emphasis technique is proposed to compensate for the data-dependent jitter.
