Original Abstract
It is shown how environmental problems caused by a need of disposal of sludge from a pulp and paper plant can efficiently be solved. The thermal treatment proved itself to be the most appropriate solution. It is demonstrated through a retrofit of one large pulp plant with a capacity more than 100 tons of wet sludge per day. The first stage of retrofit consisted in substantial improving incinerator and off-gas cleaning system. Second stage of retrofit can be characterized as a “waste to energy” one. Heat of flue gas is utilized for heat recovery and preheating water for steam generation. In addition to economic benefit the environmental one was achieved. By utilizing energy of flue gas, emissions from the local power and heating plant were reduced.
