Original Abstract

The sliding action together with the high pressure creates critical scuffing conditions between the teeth so that special gear oils are required for hypoid or worm gears. The friction and wear of such a lubricated contact and thereby hypoid gears is strongly dependent on the formation of an efficient lubrication film between rubbing surface. The detailed analysis of the behaviour of lubricated contacts between teeth in hypoid gears covering the wide range of operating conditions is required for their design.
